Fractal

Founder & Coordinator · Independent events project · 2019–present

Overview

Fractal is a decentralised, non-profit club night and events project that I founded and have coordinated since 2019. I established its operational framework, booking processes, brand identity, ethos and governance structure from the outset, and have continued to develop them as the project has grown.

This is seven years of repeated operating experience rather than a night that ran once. The same framework has been set up in three cities, handed to affiliated teams, and kept running through changes of venue, city and personnel.

On the figures: I have personally coordinated a significant number of events across multiple UK cities, and affiliated teams operating under the same framework have contributed to a wider programme of 70 or more events nationally. Events I've been directly involved in have ranged from around 200-capacity club nights to affiliated events of up to 1,000 attendees.

Growth & programming

Fractal began in Durham and has since run in Newcastle and Bristol. The first Durham event sold out, as did the first Bristol event. Programming covers jungle, acid, techno, psytrance, hardcore, breakcore, electro and adjacent styles, with a stated editorial position: pushing the boundaries of psychedelic and rave music, and giving artists full creative freedom.

Programming work includes artist booking, fee negotiation, lineup construction and developing recurring event concepts. FRESH is one such concept — a Fractal Bristol night built on a single constraint, where DJs may only mix releases from the last three months. Collaborations with other collectives and soundsystems — Obsidian, Moon Rack, Nexus Soundsystem, Subsolar Soundsystem — have been used to reach new audiences and share production capacity.

Production & operations

Communications & design

Promotion, press and the visual identity have been run in-house throughout. That covers the Fractal identity itself, per-event artwork, social output and listings. The posters below are the project's own design history — produced for real events rather than assembled as portfolio pieces.

Genuine event artwork, 2022–2024. Dates and venues are taken from the posters themselves; where a poster carries no year, the caption says so rather than estimating.
